How to Begin a Relationship with Christ

Beginning a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is the first step of your Journey. Confessing Jesus as Lord and Savior is how you begin a relationship with God. At First Stuttgart The Apostle Paul says in the passage below there is only one way of becoming part of God’s family – through faith in Christ Jesus.

“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

God’s desire is for each person he has created, and that’s every person who has ever lived or ever will live on this planet, to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Yet that’s not reality. By nature people reject God’s rule over their lives, and that leaves us under a state of corruption and condemnation. The Bible calls this rejection of God sin. And sin has left a huge void in our hearts because we have chosen to live our lives without God. Sin is the universal problem. As Scripture states no one is immune to sin.

“All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, and each of us has turned to his own way.” Isaiah 53:6

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’s glorious ideal.” Romans 3:23

“If we say that we never sin, we are only fooling ourselves, and refuse to accept the truth.” 1 John 1:8

The Good News of Scripture is that there is a solution to our sin. Jesus, God in the flesh, absorbed God’s righteous wrath against our sin as he sacrificed his life on the cross out of love for each of us. If any other way would have worked, Jesus Christ would not have had to come and die on the cross. But Jesus did come and lived a perfectly sinless life and taking our sin upon himself on the cross died so that we might live. Jesus Christ said:

“I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. No one comes to the Father, except through me” John 14:10.

The Apostle Paul explained it this way:

“God is on one side and all people are on the other side and Christ Jesus is between them to bring them together, by giving His life for all mankind.” 1 Timothy 2:5

God has already done His part to restore our relationship to Him. He took the initiative. Now He waits for each of us to individually accept what He has done for us. Here’s what the Bible says about beginning a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. 1. Admit that God has not been first place in your life, that your sins have separated you from God, and ask Him to forgive your sins.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrong.” 1 John 1:9

2. Believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay for your sins, that He rose from the dead on the third day, and is alive today.

“God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

“If you confess that Jesus is Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (Jesus) by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

3. Turn from your sin and turn to Jesus Christ. This is the process the Bible calls repentance. It means having a change of mind. It’s realizing that our self-serving lifestyle is a deception that leads to death and that God’s plan is truth that leads to life.

“I have declared to both Jew and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.” Acts 20:21

4. Trust in Jesus as your only hope for salvation. Accept God’s free gift of salvation. Don’t try to earn it.

“Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

“For it is by grace you are saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Our relationship to God is not restored by anything we do, but on the basis of what Jesus has already done for us! 5. Invite Jesus Christ to come into your life and direct your heart and life. Experience the radical, life-changing love of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and become the follower of God you were created to be.

“To all who receive Him, He gives the right to become children of God. All we need to do is to trust Him to save us. All those who believe this are reborn! – not a physical rebirth. . . but from the will of God!” John 1:12-13

“Jesus says, ‘Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in. . .” Revelation 3:20

You can take these steps and begin a relationship with God through Jesus Christ by praying a prayer like the one below. God knows your heart and is not as concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. We encourage you to let this prayer serve as a guide as you call out to God and experience His life-changing love. “Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is your Son and that He died on the cross for my sins. I turn from my sins and turn to Jesus as the only hope for salvation. I invite Jesus to come into my life and be my Savior and Lord. Thank you for the gift of eternal life! Take control of my life and make me the kind of person you created me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

“Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13

Aren’t you thankful that salvation is what God does for us? And that your part of salvation is simply to place your faith in Christ Jesus. . . to call on the name of the Lord?
