At First Stuttgart, we never ask our members to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. We only expect our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. The Bible teaches four primary responsibilities of church members.
PROTECT THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH.
By acting in love toward other members
“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.”
1 Peter 3:8
By practicing forgiveness
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other; just as in Christ God forgave you.”
By refusing to gossip
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”
By following the leaders
“Remember your leaders, who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
Hebrews 13:7, 17
SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHURCH
By praying for its health and growth.
“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ. . .Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”
By inviting people to attend
“Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.”
By warmly welcoming those who visit
“So, warmly welcome each other into the church, just as Christ has warmly welcomed you; then God will be glorified.”
Romans 15:7 (LB)
SERVE THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH
By discovering my gifts and talents
“Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you. . .”
1 Peter 4:10
By being equipped to serve by my Pastors
“God gave. . .some to be pastors and teachers to prepare God’s people for works of ministry, so that the body of Christ may be built up. . .”
By developing a servant’s heart
“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ. . . who took on the very nature of a servant. . .”
Philippians 2:3-4, 7
SUPPORT THE TESTIMONY OF THE CHURCH
By attending faithfully
“Let us not give up the habit of meeting together. . .but let us encourage one another.”
By living a godly life
“But whatever happens, make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the gospel of Christ.”
Philippians 1:27 (Phillips)
By giving regularly
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Test me and see if I will not throw open the windows of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”
“On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income. . .”
1 Corinthians 16:2
“But just as you excel in everything. . .see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
2 Corinthians 8:7
By sharing my faith story
“Jesus said to his followers, ‘Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.”
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
1 Peter 3:15
Now you know what First Stuttgart expects of each member. Here’s what you can expect of First Stuttgart.
THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH GOD
Saint Augustine wrote: “You awake us to delight in your presence; for you made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Our Pastors and other worship leaders spend many hours each week designing worship experiences that will lead people of all ages and stages of life to connect with God. We value our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Each week our members and guests can expect a variety of musical styles that are uplifting, inspiring and celebrative and Biblical teaching/preaching that is practical and relevant.
THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS
At First Stuttgart we value “community.” First Stuttgart is not only a friendly church, but a church where you can develop friendships. Everybody needs friends and a sense of family. You do not have to know everybody in the church (and we pray we will never be that small), but you do need to know some people. That’s why we say: “At First Stuttgart we plan to grow larger and smaller at the same time!” We continue to add additional opportunities for our members to develop relationships within the church. We encourage each of our members to belong to at least one small group.
THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE
Your life has significance, because God has a purpose for you! At First Stuttgart we take seriously our responsibility to equip our members in discovering their ministry in the church and mission in the world. We challenge our members to give their lives to a cause much greater than themselves: the Kingdom of God!
THE OPPORTUNITY TO INVEST YOUR LIFE
At First Stuttgart we take seriously our responsibility to equip our members in discovering their ministry in the church and mission in the world. We challenge our members to invest their lives in a cause much greater than themselves: the Kingdom of God. It’s not about us; it’s all about Him!
One word is common to each of the above: OPPORTUNITY! Connecting with God, Discovering your Purpose, and Experiencing Meaningful Relationships are opportunities available to each member of First Stuttgart. To “connect with God” you have to attend worship and have a desire to “connect with God.” To “discover your purpose” you have to take advantage of the opportunities to discover your gifts, be involved in a ministry, and share your faith. To “experience meaningful relationships” you have to “let your guard down” and get to know people through our small group experiences. To “invest your life” you have to take some risks, step out of your comfort zone, and follow wherever Christ leads. That might be across the street or half-way around the world.
If you desire to connect with God, discover your purpose in life, experience meaningful relationships, and invest your life in a cause greater than yourself, First Stuttgart is the church for you! That’s our promise!
Having received Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord and having been baptized by immersion as a believer, and being in agreement with First Stuttgart’s statements, strategy and structure, I now feel led by the Holy Spirit to unite with the First Stuttgart church family.
