Our Purpose

The purpose of First Baptist Church is to honor and serve God by developing fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Our reason for existing is based on the teachings of Jesus, known as the Great Commission and the Great Commandment, which define what we call the journey of becoming a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

“Jesus Said, ‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
“Jesus Said,
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart…soul…and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
What’s involved in the journey and what does a “fully devoted follower of Jesus” look like? Here’s what you will hear around First Stuttgart:

Beginning a Relationship with Jesus Christ

The first step of the journey is beginning a relationship with Jesus Christ. Regardless of where we are in our journey, we all began the same way: through faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord! (If you have questions of how to begin a relationship with Jesus Christ, click here.) From that day forward, God is committed to His purpose of transforming us into the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ! This is not so much about what we do as it is about what God does in us.

We believe a genuine, personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the foundation for discovering the answers to the real problems of life. Being in relationship with Jesus and experiencing the life-changing love of God gives purpose, meaning and significance to life. That’s why we believe every girl and boy, every woman and man in our community deserves the opportunity to see, hear and respond to the life-changing love of God through Jesus Christ and become the followers of God they were created to be. And that’s why we are committed to “go and make disciples” in our community and our world!

Belonging to Christ’s Family

As in any journey we take, as we travel there are plenty of opportunities to become distracted and discouraged and we need someone to encourage us, believe in us and remind us of our destination. That’s why God created the church! And that’s why we believe belonging to a local church is the best way to experience the Christian journey. (To discover how you can belong to First Stuttgart click here.)

We do not believe that the Christian journey is a solo flight. We believe that faith development happens best in the context of community where people have the opportunity to love each other and learn from each other. At First Stuttgart we are a community that does life together. That’s why we are committed to creating a place where believers can belong. We do not believe that you have to know everyone in the church to belong to the church, but you do have to know someone. We believe every member should belong to some type of small group. That’s why we are committed to growing “smaller” and “larger” at the same time. As more and more people make the decision to belong to First Stuttgart, we believe additional small groups and ministry opportunities must be created for believers to do life together. (Check out some of these opportunities by visiting What We Do.)

Believing like Christ

Jesus instructed his followers to “teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” We believe the Bible is the Word of God and its truths can transform our lives.
Jesus said,

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”
We believe that followers of Jesus are lifetime-learners because the Christian journey lasts a lifetime. We believe that biblical truth never changes. (Click here to read “What We Believe.”) We believe in using a variety of methods in teaching biblical truth, valuing creativity as a gift of God. We believe that belonging can precede believing. We do not believe that a person must know everything about the Bible and Jesus to belong to the church. We are committed to teaching a biblical worldview to all ages. We do not teach biblical truth just for the sake of knowing biblical truth but for the transformation of individuals into “fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.”

Becoming Christ-like

Every journey has a destination; a point at which you can say, “I’ve arrived.” The Christian journey is an adventure of a lifetime which lasts a lifetime. This journey continues until the day you leave this planet of Jesus Christ returns. At First Stuttgart you will discover people at various stages of the journey. Some will be a few steps ahead of you. Others will be walking in step with you. And still others will be just beginning the journey. Regardless of where you are in your journey, we are committed to walking with you each step of the way as you discover God’s plan for your life and begin living your life in light of His purpose. We are committed to pray for you, encourage you, support you and provide the very best opportunities for you to take your next step in becoming a “fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ.”

We believe the church is not a building but the visible expression of God’s love in our community. We believe that the church is not just the mouth of Jesus but His hands and feet as well. We believe that real ministry happens outside the walls of the church building as believers become the “love of God in flesh” in our community and around the world. At First Stuttgart success is not measured in how many people gather on Sunday morning but in how many people go out into the community Monday-Saturday. Living out the Gospel is the greatest gift we can offer our community. We love our community and desire to see it transformed for God’s glory.

We believe God’s Kingdom knows no boundaries. We are willing to sacrifice our preferences and our comfort to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe there is not one square inch of our world over which Jesus does not declare “Mine!” We believe in praying, giving and going so the people of the world can have the opportunity of knowing God and experiencing His love.

First Stuttgart is not a church where you can come in, sit down and soak up. We are a church on a journey of becoming “fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ”, trying to obey His great commission and great commandment. We are willing to do whatever it takes (as long as it’s not illegal or immoral) to accomplish this mission. We have not arrived at our destination, but with God’s help, we are on our way. We invite you to join us for the adventure of a lifetime where your journey becomes our journey!
